Here come the land crabs

Every year the first rains in Playa Las Tortugas in June trigger the annual migration of the blue land crab. It’s really a sight to see. One day you will not see a single crab, and the next you will see hundreds, maybe thousands in Playa Las Tortugas.

The crabs spend the dry months several kilometers back in the forest buried under the soil to keep from drying out. Upon the first rains they mate and then begin their migration to the sea to release their eggs. Each crab releases an enormous number of eggs, like hundreds of thousands. So, you can imagine the benefit they provide to the other ocean creatures.

Our rains typically begin in mid to late June, so keep your eyes open if you’re visiting during that time. Actually, don’t worry, you’ll be shocked by the influx. When the crabs see you don’t expect a welcome reception. They will take a defensive posture with claws up ready to battle. They are impressive little creatures.
