Things to Keep in Mind

during your stay in Playa Las Tortugas

#1. Beware of Falling Coconuts.

Just keep a 6-foot distance from the trunks of the coconut trees and you’ll be fine.

#2. Use Bug Spray.

There are “no-see-ums” in the grassy areas of Playa Las Tortugas and in the summer there are mosquitos. In the evening or on calm days it’s best to apply bug spray when walking from the villa to the pool or beach.

#3. Watch for Rip Currents.

If the waves have size to them beware of rip currents. If caught in one stay calm and just swim parallel to the shore until you’re clear.

#4. Lock doors at Night.

When you settle in for the night please lock the front door and the sliding glass doors in the bedroom, and ensure the windows in the showers have the wooden sticks in place. We’ve never had a problem at La Villa Reyes, but it’s always best to be safe.

#5. Do the Stingray Shuffle.

It’s best to shuffle your feet in the sand when in the water to scare away any stingrays. If you happen to get stung heat water, pour it in a bowl, soak a small towel in the water, and apply it to the injury. This should help a lot.

#6. Apply Sunscreen.

Playa Las Tortugas is in the tropics and at the same latitude as Hawaii, so it’s best to apply sunscreen.

#7. Summertime Thunderstorms.

One the best parts of visiting Playa Las Tortugas in the summer are the late afternoon and evening thunderstorms. But beware. When you see them rolling in it’s best to get off the beach and indoors. The storms are spectacular but you don’t want to be exposed.

#8. Rough Road into Playa Las Tortugas.

Playa Las Tortugas remains so wonderfully peaceful and uncrowded partly because it takes some patience to get here. The last 9 kilometers of road are flat and can be navigated with a normal car, but quite bumpy. Please be patient and allow yourself 30 minutes to travel this section of the trip.

#9. No Restaurants or Grocery Stores nearby.

Playa Las Tortugas is a non-commercial area so there are no stores, restaurants, or beach vendors here. It helps make it so very peaceful but it also means it takes a little planning to ensure you bring all your supplies with you. The nearest town with facilities is 40 minutes away.
